Day 21 part 3. Train to Oslo and some sightseeing.
It was sadly time to head back to the station to pick up our bags and then to the campsite. One last look at the view and then we turned towards the fjord and rolled back down the hill. A gentle afternoon haze had taken the heat out of the sun but Oslo was still a great place to be.
We headed first down to the harbour area with the intriguing and impressive Town Hall building sited between the modernity of Akke Brugge and the antiquity of Oslo Castle. We also found a couple of old buildings near to the castle and tram lines running cross the large open space by the harbour.
Last stop before the station was a small supermarket and mindful that this was our last night bought enough groceries for that evening and the following morning. We did our best to use up our Norwegian Kroner, so picked up a single use barbeque some corn on the cob and veggies to barbeque. We also got some stamps from the post office above the supermarket with the idea of writing postcards and sending them before we got home.
After picking up our bags our last navigational problem of the trip lay ahead of us. Due to the campsite not being marked on the map we missed a turning and went up the wrong side of the Ekeberg. So I stopped to take a couple of pictures whilst waiting for Damae to catch up. One nice thing was that it lead us to the restaurant at the Ekeberg. This interesting building reminded us of the Stadsschouwburg in Utrecht designed by Dudok. The view from the car park was wonderful, and later that evening we went back to try and take some photos of the skyline.
Having come up the wrong steep way we then took a path for about a kilometre and came out of the forest at the 'back end' of the campsite. We joined the queue to check in and after about 15 minutes we wandered off to find a place to pitch the tent. The campsite is sited on a hill and the field slopes almost everwhere. We wandered about in end of day indecision before finding a flattish spot.
We made dinner with the barbeque which was remarkably successful, there was enough heat to boil the kettle so we did. The only downside was that the kettle ended up covered in soot (rather like the one we saw dangling over the fire at Kaupang).
We did the usual evening things, and went for a wander to the restaurant to admire the scenery. Here are the more successful night photos. Unfortunately a slightly abusive rather drunk man accosted us which took the edge off our enjoyment. Still we survived.
