Bikes - Touring and Folding
We're now touring both with the Bromptons and the Moose and Troll. So twice as many pictures to do.
Changes to our 'proper' touring bikes have been somewhat less than say between 2005 and 2006. Our handlebar bags now hang off the front of the handlebars. The Ortlieb bags we bought after 2006 were just that little bit bigger front to back than the Agu ones.
Damae's handlebar bag is the Plus version of my bag, and matches her front panniers. It has a useful net pocket on the front which is really rather handy indeed. It goes without saying that anything you put in it will get wet when it rains.
We also ran into a top box for her bike, which like the panniers has the Ortlieb waterproof zip. Lastly I had to replace her mudguards due to an accident caused by tiredness. The Troll now has some longer SKS touring bike mudguards.
See the individual pages for a little more information.
As for the Bromptons we can certainly carry enough on them for short trips. I am currently experimenting with ways of mounting small Ortlieb panniers on the bikes. Initial experiments are encouraging. With the experimental set up we have enough space to take the 7.5 kg Wind-4 tent. It is quite amusing to have a tent so big and bikes so small!
Cooking
Not too many changes here. The spice and beverage handlebar bag has been replaced with a larger plastic food container from IKEA. This is for longer touring trips. We're thinking of using this with the Bromptons as well.
We've also added a Trangia 27 with Duossal pans to our collection. This packs a fair bit smaller than the 25 series which is important for Brompton touring. Not surprisingly in initial tests the Trangia 27 seems to be more efficient than either the 25 or Mini burners.
Tents
The Macpac Citadel is still our main workhorse. To this we have added a small wing from the Bever own brand. This weighs around a half kilo plus the weight of the pole. The wing provides significantly improved comfort in wet weather so will almost certainly get taken on all trips.
The Eureka Moonshadow Duo gets used more often than before especially when touring with the Bromptons. Importantly besides that it weighs less than the Macpac the pole length are shorter so they fit easily in a Brompton touring front pannier. We use it in combination with the Bever tarp. At the moment the Moonshadow is at the importers having the groundsheet tested. We are not sure if it is condensation from above or seepage from below.
Winter is approaching so the MSR Wind-4 should get some more use. We have decided to go off with it and the Bromptons at some point just for a laugh. The absurdity of arriving with such small bikes at a campsite and unpacking an unnecessarily large tent appeals to our sense of humour.
