Day 22 Part 3. Sightseeing in Kolding.

We spent some more time wandering round the building and looking at other exhibitions. I think there were a few rooms of paintings and every now and again we bumped into a plaque on the wall explaining something about the building itself. Eventually we found a large spiral staircase and started walking up that. Off the staircase on the way up there was a smaller room with an exhibition of a project by local schoolchildren. It was nice to see amongst all the other items of antiquity a room full of fresh impressions and ideas.

Damae had gone on ahead up the stairs. I felt a bit uneasy walking up as the staircase started narrowing. After dithering for a few minutes I heard Damae's clear voice, took a deep breath and headed upwards.

The reward was a flat topped tower with big fences round it and wonderful views of the town of Kolding. The town is sited at the end of a fjord, a Danish style fjord that is! It nestles in the valley that runs into the fjord and has a small port and industrial area which we were to cycle past later in the day. It was nice to see the town spread out in front of us. Damae decided that this would be a good place to take a photo of the two of us. After several attempts we gave it up as a bad job.

We'd pretty much seen enough so headed slowly out of the castle. It is well worth a visit even if only to look at the reinstatement of the building. It is a lovely space and a great idea.

On leaving the Castle we heard the sound of a band playing through a PA system. It seemed as if east Jutland has its festivals at the end of August as there had been a big event in Randers as we breezed through. We were able to briefly enjoy the wonders of MIDI and synthesizers before the mellifluous sounds of 'Bert Bertson's Top 100 Experience' diminished into the distance.

For lunch we returned to the station area. We were going to have to pick up our bikes anyway to get to the Trapholt so it seemed a good idea to go back. We nipped into the local Netto to get some food, which we managed relatively quickly. We bought what we thought was fruits of the forest juice in a 1 litre pack.

We found a bench near to the bikes and prepared to do battle with the wasps. We ate some sandwiches with the cherry tomatoes and olives we had just bought jumping up and down when a wasp got particularly close. After we'd eaten as much as we felt like under the circumstances, we opened the fruits of the forest juice to discover it was cordial rather like Ribena rather than something you could just drink.

Today being Saturday the Netto was now closed so we couldn't buy something else. Grump! Luckily we had an empty pop bottle still so we filled it up with as much concentrate as it could take. With the water I had been carting round all day, I then made up then and there, and drank it instead of a cuppa. The rest of the pack we threw away (probably much to the delight of the local wasp community). The pop bottle made it all the way to Utrecht and we discovered there that it was actually quite yummy when made with cold water.
